INTRODUCTION:
Fr. Wilhelm Meyer is the founder of the society of St. Ann where the St. Ann School is patronized under the guidance of this great saint.
BIOGRAPHY:
Fr. Meyer was born on September 12th 1870 in the village of Schoetz, Canton Luzern. The house in which he was born was a typical thatched farmhouse in luzem. His family was very large consisting of 13 children - of whom Meyer was the 10th. The Guiding spirit of the home was his mother and Meyer was very close to her heart and this enabled him in his future career as he became the architect of St. Ann's society in order to "Reveal the merciful love of God".
He was ordained a priest on July 18th 1897 by Bishop Leon Hard Mass. He was considered as a fervent and zealous priest, full of activity. But he was taken away at the peak of his youth. He died of hard sarcoma, which is known as cancer, His pieces of advices are a rich heritage for the society of St. Ann.
At his deathbed, he encouraged the sisters who were totally confused of their future in the absence of their spiritual director Fr. Meyer with these following convincing words.
"The society of St. Ann is the work of the - Divine providence and his Work endure although people change or pass away, Whatever is built on the Lord is built upon the solid ground". After a short but love busy span of 15 years of priestly ministry he left for his eternal reward on February 1912.
HIS VISION & MISSION:
"When a work meets the needs of the time it indicates the will of God.
Fr. Wilhelm Meyer was a man of God with a very clear and far sighted vision - in fact the vision of a prophet - He experienced Jesus as the most compassionate and merciful son of the Father and he always tried to be his true follower in his mercy and compassion. He underwent a discernment process based on the spiritual awareness of St. Ignatius of Loyola and discovered new horizons, that God had opened up for him in the oppressive social conditions of his time. His prophetic vision was to alleviate the sufferings of sick, who were deprived of any kind of care and comfort. Moved by the compassion of Jesus reflected in the gospel... "in so far as you did this to the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me" (Mt. 25:40) his heart went to the needy.
Responding to the crying needs of he time he founded the society of St. Ann on Nov 21st 1909, to continue the work of mercy and compassion of Jesus, to the least ones of the society in a spirit of sacrifice, active - charity and cheerfulness. His far sightedness, his deep spirit of courage and conviction is evidently seen in the charism, 'live to reveal the merciful love of Jesus'. This dynamic and relevant charism is a gift of God and grace, given to us as sharers of kingdom in his mission, to build up the human community of brothers and sisters irrespective of caste creed and religion, giving always priority to the least ones in all our services. As the sharers of God's salvific plan, we render our service even today effectively, sensitizing the needs of the present in different sphere of human life.
CONCLUSION:
"I take leave of this world, with a deep sense of gratitude to God, who is his great generosity has blessed the work of the society of St. Ann" - Fr. Meyer. Rector Wilhelm Meyer, from the very beginning had placed the society, under the protection of St. Ann. He travelled on life's unknown highway looking for signposts to follow the way. He trod, one by one to find what he could do for the Lord, in the given situation. He listened to his inner voice. He understood the purpose of life, gave it a meaning, by caring for the helpless and needy. During his short life, he worked wonders by bringing healing and wholeness, comfort and consolation, to the lives of the young and old men and women The and the sick and the suffering.
Within a short time after the foundation of the Society of St. Ann, he became very ill in the spring of 1911. He left 70 sisters and aspirants to the care of the Divine Providence and went to receive his eternal reward. With a strong persistent of approaching death, Fr. Wilhelm Meyer wrote in his last letter, "I take leave of this world with a deep sense of gratitude to God, who in his great generosity has blessed the work of the society of St. Ann. He also assured that society of St. Ann would never die, because it has already become an Angel of Charity and angels never die".
